A Step-by-Step Guide to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Date: January 6, 2020

Makeup Brushes

One must pay attention to the hygiene factor when it comes to blending and smudging sponges, brushes, et al. When they come in contact with your skin, they gather bacteria, dead skin, dust, and more. When not cleaned regularly, these daily-use makeup must-haves can be toxic for your skin, causing irritation, eruptions, and other skin conditions by transferring the accumulated harmful elements to your skin. As a Professional Makeup Artist, you must be aware of this process.

So, here’s a step-by-step cleaning hack to keep your makeup tools spic and span.

Step 1: Rinse them well

Start your cleaning process by running plain water through the bristles. Avoid touching the water to the base of the brush, especially if they are made of wood or metal. Plastic bases might just be fine to run underwater. Preferably use warm water to get rid of the makeup remnants and clumps. For sponges and blenders, allow them to soak the water thoroughly.

Step 2: Clean with a mild soap

No cleaning is complete without soap. But when it comes to makeup tools, use a mild liquid soap or shampoo to clean the bristles. You can either soak them in soap and water solution in a container, bases upright, or apply a few drops of the cleanser and rub the bristles against a ridged surface or between your palms until they are clean of all makeup. Wash them until water runs clear and shake off any excess water.

Step 3: Disinfect your tools

This is a step most people tend to ignore but is necessary nevertheless. When it comes to your skin, you can never be careful enough. After cleaning with soap, soak the brushes and sponges in water mixed with vinegar. You can also soak them in rubbing alcohol and then rinse them thoroughly.

Step 4: Dry your brushes properly

Remember to dry the brushes and sponges completely, or the moisture can gather fungus. You can dab them with a dry towel until the water is dried. Alternatively, once the extra water is drained off, run a hair dryer on high to dry them. You can also air dry them and leave them on a paper towel for a day or two until completely dry.

Good institutes surely include this process in their Professional Makeup Courses because they understand beauty is nothing without a healthy skin and body.
